Description The Robert Sorby Swan Neck Hollowing Tools are designed for end grain work, hollowing small and miniature work using branch wood or end grain timber. (The items pictured are as follows: (from left to right) 851H, 854 wall thicknessing gauge attached to 851H, 852H with 853, Depth stop attached to the blade, and 850H) The smallest (850H) is designed to work through the narrowest of apertures, down to as small as 3/8″ (10mm). The noring bar and depth stop (852H and 853) form an ideal method of quickly opening up a vessel to provide both entry opening and final hollowing depth. Where space permits the larger tool (851H) provides a heavier section and has the benefit of a replaceable swivel cutting tip. This can be used in conjunction with the wall thickness gauge (854) to create consistent side wall thickness. The individual shape of these tools makes them suitable for blind turning or under cutting where reach is restricted. The 14″ version (851H) is designed for end grain use on shallower depth projects whilst the slightly larger model (855H) allows for greater reach. The 24″ version (859H) is produced from a more substantial section steel, and is more suitable for both end grain and side grain working. These tools are used with the round bar directly behind the swan neck (curved area) against the tool rest. Both 851H and 855H can be used in conjunction with wall thicknessing gauges.
