Finish and Colours SecilTek Isovit Silicate Paint is a flat matt finish available in 24 standard colours shown below. These colours are homemade shades and are not linked to any RAL or NCS numbers. We can also produce over 2,000 colours, including close matches to some NCS, RAL and BS4800. Colours shown online should be used as a guide only. We advise you request a physical colour chart from us or purchase 100 ml sample pots before committing to an order. SecilTek Isovit Silicate Paint colours may show differences in shade, especially for darker colours. This characteristic is a property intrinsic to mineral-based paints, thus obtaining a look with colour nuances typically found in paints of old whitewashed buildings. Due to the potential for batch variation, we recommend you order sufficient paint in a single order to complete your work. SecilTek Silicate Paint and Primer are available in sample pots to try. Application For bare surfaces apply one coat of Silicate Primer followed by two even coats of Silicate Paint by brush or roller*. Allow 12-14 hours between coats. (*roller application may result in thinner coats of paint requiring an additional coat). Please contact us for advice on application on to existing painted surfaces. Do not apply SecilTek Isovit Silicate Paint: At room and substrate temperatures below 10 °C, above 30 °C and relative humidity of more than 70%. Where rain is forecast during and up to 48 hours after completion of application. Without sufficient protection on substrates exposed to direct sunlight and/or strong exposure to winds. On frozen or wet substrates. On hot substrates. Paint each façade under the same conditions of temperature, sunlight, wind and humidity to minimise risk with differentiated drying and variations in the final colour occurring. Work stops (working joints) may result in variations in colour. This can also occur between the first and second stages. Therefore the painting of entire panels/elevations in their entirety is recommended. We recommend you use paint from the same production batch for each job. Size 100 ml sample tin, 2.5 litre, 5 litre and 15 litre. Coverage Approximately 6-8 m²/ litre per coat, depending on the finish and porosity. About SecilTek Isovit Silicate Paint Silicate paints were designed at the behest of King Ludwig I of Bavaria in the late 18th Century. Ludwig commissioned a paint that looked and worked like limewash, but was more durable in the harsh winter climate. The small pore size of silicate paint allows high water vapour permeability (breathability). At the same time these small pores don’t allow the larger rainwater molecules to penetrate. There are instances in Germany of silicate paints lasting 100 years! Like limewash, silicate paint soaks into the substrate that you apply it to. In addition to this, potassium silicate reacts to form a micro-crystalline bond – a process known as silicification. We generally recommend silicate paint as opposed to limewash for external decoration where there is no compelling historic requirement to match an existing finish. Silicate paints have a comparable thermal expansion co-efficient to a mineral substrate. This therefore minimises the stresses and damage caused by differential expansion. Silicate paints are also mineral paints; they silicify within the pores of the substrate so are bound to the surface. Breathability SecilTek Isovit Silicate Paint has an Sd value of 0.01 which puts it in the highest level of breathability, Class 1. The Sd value is the resistance of the paint film to water vapour expressed as the equivalent thickness of air in metres. The lower the Sd value the more breathable the paint film. Paint breathability is class rated, from Class I to Class III. Class I in this instance denotes the highest level of breathability. Silicate paints typically offer a longer lifespan than a limewash and are less affected by acid rain. They also offer a greater degree of water shedding than a limewash. This is important in protecting the historic fabric of the building as our climate moves to more intense and lengthy periods of rainfall.
