Victorian Aesthetic Movement Display Cabinet A decorative Victorian Aesthetic Movement ebonised display cabinet, dating from the late 19th century and full of understated elegance. Finished in its black ebonised finish with delicate hand-painted gilt linework, the cabinet is further enhanced by two charming painted bird panels to the base and an attractive glazed display door with original mirrored panel beneath. Compact enough to fit comfortably into any room, this versatile cabinet would work as a display cabinet, drinks cabinet, hallway piece or decorative bedside cupboard. The interior has two generous shelves, making it ideal for displaying ceramics, books, collectables or other such objects and the top lifts up via is hinge, which is rather unusual. The cabinet has developed a mellow character over many decades, with gentle age-related wear that only adds to its appeal. The original painted decoration remains remarkably crisp, while the ebonised finish has acquired a nice soft sheen. The lock remains in place although the original key has been lost, and a replacement period handle could easily be fitted if desired, although I rather like its understated simplicity as it stands. An elegant and increasingly sought-after example of the Aesthetic Movement, offering decorative impact without dominating a room, and a lovely piece for anyone who appreciates Victorian design with a lighter, artistic touch. A beautiful decorative antique with genuine period charm. 94cm (h) x 57cm (w) x 38cm (d)
